Their main point is in challenge the readers to put together all the details, realize that the clue is still missing, and keep searching for it. I will demonstrate Kuzmin’s witty send-ups of Russian classics (Gogol’, Dostoyevsky, Leskov and above all Tolstoy) in his short stories, “Kushetka teti Soni” (1907 translated by Michael Green as “Aunt Sonya’s Sofa”) and “Lektsiia Dostoevskogo” (Dostoevsky’s Lecture published in 1913).

Following Boris Eikhenbaum’s insight that “if it seems that Kuzmin is telling a story, do not believe him in fact, he offers a puzzle from modern life,” in my paper I discuss one possible way of reading Kuzmin’s prose, namely, by solving such puzzles. In 1920, Boris Eikhenbaum started his essay on Mikhail Kuzmin’s prose with the following observation: “Kuzmin’s prose has not become a part of the tradition - all the more interesting is it to speak about it.” Since then not much has changed: it is still terra incognita. Permanent Evolution gathers together for the first time Tynianov’s seminal articles on literary theory and film, including several articles never before translated into English. Although Tynianov was first a scholar of Russian literature, his ideas transcend the boundaries of any one genre or national tradition.

His essays on Russian literary classics, like Pushkin’s Eugene Onegin and works by Dostoevsky and Gogol, as well as on the emerging art form of filmmaking, provide insight into the ways art and literature evolve and adapt new forms of expression. Tynianov developed a groundbreaking conceptualization of literature as a system within-and in constant interaction with-other cultural and social systems.
